Nightclubbing, from 'The Idiot' (1977)
The Idiot is Iggy Pop's first solo album. Produced by David Bowie, Pop, speaking of Bowie, described the Krautrock-influenced "Nightclubbing" as "my comment on what it was like hanging out with Bowie every night".
It was recorded one night after the musicians had left, Bowie playing the melody on piano with an old rhythm machine for backing. Pop largely wrote the lyrics on the spot, Bowie suggesting that he write about "walking through the
night like ghosts".

 Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 1984-2014.A comprehensive collection of the work of Nick
Cave and gang spanning thirty years of music, from debut From Her To Eternity,
to 2014's Push The Sky Away. Newest record Skeleton Tree
is not included because this set was set to be released before that record was made.
From Nick Cave: "There are some
people out there who don't know where to start with The Bad Seeds. Three decades of
writing is a lot of songs, some songs for this collection were chosen because they've
stuck around, others are lessor songs that are personal favourites, others are too big and
have too much history to be left out. And then there are those that didn't make it, poor
things! They are the songs you must discover on your own." Mr. Cave, I

 Do you love the classic
Peter Murphy? If so, Cleopatra
Records is releasing a live House of Blues recording from the new millennium.This is an incredible set, recorded at the
height of Mr. Murphy's career during the Wild Birds Tour. Featuring impressive supporting
musicians Kevin Haskins on drums (Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets), Eric Avery on
bass (Jane's Addiction), and Peter DiStefano on guitar (Porno For Pyros). I think this is
Peter Murphy at his best!
To be released on February 12th on
double compact disc AND on double white vinyl in very handsome packaging, the songs are
essentially a best of so I'll not list them here (Peter Murphy solo albums thru Cascade +
98's EP Recall, no Bauhaus songs). Sure to sell out, I would suggest you preorder directly
from Cleopatra
Records. |
 2016 will bring us not one, but two new Mesh releases, slated for summer 2016
from Dependent Records. In Fall of
2015, Mesh and Covenant both played
the sold out "Gothic Meets Classic" Festival in Leipzig, Germany (home of
another favorite Clan of Xymox, who
is currently touring and will make their way to California in August 2016).Both Mesh and Covenant's sets were
professionally recorded, but as of this writing only a Mesh announcement has been made.
In addition to the live orchestrated
album, Mesh are currently in the studio and plan on releasing their fourth recording with
Dependent Records, tentatively titled "Looking Skyward".

 Looking skyward, I can't
help but think of Mr. David Bowie. Particularly thinking of one of the last images he
chose to share with us, while beseeching "Look Up Here, I'm In Heaven", from the
song 'Lazarus' of Bowie's 25th album "Blackstar". What an incredible image and
sentiment and song and album to gift to us in dying days. Such a generous thing to do! The
vinyl is sold out, but I noticed that the CDs are still in stock locally. It has been said
there will be another pressing of "Blackstar", so if you find it grab it!
David Bowie may be gone
from this earth, but "Blackstar" may not be his last album. In the past year or
so Bowie has recorded at least five more songs that have yet to see the light of day, as
long time friend, producer, and collaborator Tony Visconti has told Rolling Stone
Magazine. So I anticipate at least another EP in the coming year, unless they do what
they did with Bowie's 2013 "The Next Day". Which is to say, very quickly after
"The Next Day" was released, they released another version of the album with
additional songs included. I hope they release a separate EP.
More news: As you know, I
love collecting vinyl. Many of the older Bowie records are difficult to find, and when you
do find them they could be in questionable shape (given that they are forty-years old).
Not to mention, sometimes expensive. But fear not, because on February 26 six of
Bowie's classic albums are being reissued: From 1969 'Space Oddity', 1970's 'The Man Who
Sold The World', 1971's 'Hunky Dory', 1972's 'Ziggy Stardust', 1973's 'Aladdin Sane' and
also 'Pinups', all on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl.

 A new Assemblage 23 album has been announced for a Spring 2016 release! The
new album, 'Endure', is A23's 8th studio album, and set to coincide with a US tour! You
can pre-order 'Endure' via Tom Shear's IndieGoGo Campaign. In doing so, you'll also get your name in the
liner notes, so it's a great time to support this fantastic artist (I got mine on vinyl).

offerings, such as Assemblage 23 writing a song for you, or producing a song for you, or
mixing one of your songs. You get the idea, if you have have a band this could be a

 The
March Violets are currently on tour (The Mortality Tour) in other parts of the US, but
they still could use a little more support to help them reach their PledgeMusic goal.
They are almost there! The cool thing is, after the October tour they'll be recording in
Chicago for an anticipated Christmas day release. Check it out, and look at all the extra
goodies that are still available! Their new recording will be on vinyl and CD, you know me
I'll be going for the vinyl!
If you aren't familiar with The March
Violets, they are the other* band who hails from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, perhaps
the most famous being The Sisters of Mercy. Actually, Andrew Eldrich did release The March
Violets first 7" on his Merciful Release label, back in 1982 (about the same time The
Sisters of Mercy released their first 7"). I don't think I need to point out that The
March Violets are still making music, in the year 2015, so let's support them!
*Admittedly, I was being facetious with
'the other' band from Leeds remark. Leeds has produced many a fine musician, including:
Soft Cell, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Hollow Men, Gang of Four, and many more. |
 Peter Murphy needs
no introduction, but I've got some news. While touring with his non-Bauhaus live band (all
fine musicians in their own right) on the "Mr. Moonlight Tour: 35 Years of
Bauhaus" in 2013, a live CD was released, but on October 20, 2015 a new version is
set to arrive digitally, with nine songs that were not released on CD, including Ziggy
Stardust, Telegram Sam, Severance, Dark Entries, and more. Keep your eyes and ears
open for it (no link on the photo, it's not available as of this post).Next I would like to talk about a song that may
have flown beneath your radar, a new Peter Murphy song that is, in my humble opinion,
right up there with his very best. That song is 'The Sound of Water',
released early in summer as part of his album 'Remixes From Lion'. Most of the songs were remixed by Youth, who produced
'Lion'. I do prefer the regular version of "Water" on the CD, as opposed to the
Youth remix. Check it out.
Oh, if you have a vinyl copy of Cascade
sitting around collecting 'dust' (see what I did?), why not provide it with a new loving
home? Cascade is the only recording of Peter Murphy's that I cannot find on vinyl and
would love to own. It would be very much appreciated. In fact, I might have an extra copy
of 'Holy Smoke' to trade for it, if you insist. |
 Another band that needs no
introduction is New Order. In
September 2015, this *new* version of New Order (sans Peter Hook, the first New Order
release without his presence, but the first with the reappearance of Ms. Gillian Gilbert
since 2001's 'Get Ready'), released 'Music Complete'. I am very impressed with this music,
and it is up there with my favorite New Order records. So you'll know that I'm not your
average N.O. fangirl, I acknowledge that most of New Order's post 'Republic' (1993) albums
were, shall we say, lackluster. However, with 'Music Complete', may I be bold enough to
suggest that this recording by some almost 60-somethings is as good, if not better, than
their 20-something selves? I think I can! A few of the songs were produced by Tom Rowlands of The Chemical
Brothers (Singularity being a standout). And the closing track with The Killers' Brandon
Flowers contributing vocals, 'Superheated', is an excellent track, albeit sounding
somewhat more Killers than New Order. Other standouts are 'Plastic', and 'Stray Dog', with
spoken word by Iggy Pop.
This album is excellent, and I
adamantly suggest that you acquire this album by any means legal, ASAP! Instead of buying
this one online, why not pop into a local record store, one such as Record City in
Hillcrest (San Diego, CA), who I know for a fact has it in stock ;)

 Shikhee D'iordna has
started a new Kickstarter Project for her band Android Lust. This campaign will bring us her 6th album to date,
Berlin [Crater Volume 2]. Poised to be different than Shikhee's previous work,
'Berlin' is slated to be a creation in part composed of ambient sounds that she collects
while visiting Berlin. To watch Shikhee talk about the project, and to potentially pledge,
you can view her Kickstarter page. It's still
not too late to pick up Android Lust's 10th Anniversary Edition of 'The Dividing' (from
2014). A double LP on clear vinyl, which includes the original 2002 album, along with 6
bonus tracks (not available on the original release) that includes remixes from Collide,
Gregory Steward (Combichrist), and I, Parasite. Great stuff!

 As a Lycia fan, I eagerly
await August 25th, the day Lycia releases their 11th full studio album 'A Line That
Connects'. To be released about 2 years after their previous album 'Quiet Moments'. I have
previewed 'A Line That Connects' by means of being lucky enough to pick up a test pressing
of a 7" split Lycia released with Black Mare for Record Store Day 2015. And you can
still find a Lycia signed 7" of the song Silver Leaf, on Lycia's Merchandise Page
for only $6.
 I believe Lycia is still giving away for FREE their EP 'Fifth
Sun', via their Bandcamp page.
While it really is free, I think it would be nice if you donated a few dollars to help
support the artist.
You may not know this, but
Lycia's Tara Vanflower is also a very talented writer! At the time of this writing you are
still able to find a signed copy of Tara's 'Violent Violet: Part I' Get it while you can!
Lastly, it would appear
that you can still get a copy of 'Cold', Lycia's brilliant album from 1996 that was
reissued in 2013 by Handmade Birds. Get the Double LP
here. |
 VNV Nation recently released the
INCREDIBLE 'Resonance', a stunning orchestral rendition of some of their best songs,
performed by the Babelsberg Film Orchestra with Ronan Harris on vocals, of course.
Available on CD, and while rumored to eventually be released on vinyl, I picked it up on
limited edition 6x10inch vinyl boxset, which includes a CD and a 32 page booklet. As a
bonus, the last song of the vinyl set includes one of my favorites from VNV Nation's
previous album Transnational, "If I Was" (not available on CD). Brilliant
and beautiful! Just released in May, this is one of the best records in my
collection, pick it up while you still can. |

 Another
PledgeMusic success story, Velvet Acid Christ's 16th studio
album, Subconscious Landscapes (download link) was
released in fall 2014 and is their first release on vinyl record. Only 500 of the records
manufactured, so if you like it you'll want to click the album cover to go directly to
Metropolis Records' order page. This release tends to be different than VAC's other
recordings, in that it is not as aggressive as you may be familiar with. Crafted with
songs in a more synth-melodic styling, my personal favorite is the closing track 'Empusa',
a sort of New Order-style meets Ministry-esque electronic drum-beat delight. I'm happy to
have this in my collection! |
 Next up...Skinny Puppy's 2004 The Greater Good of the Right,
reissued and remastered on heavy weight vinyl in 2014 by Metropolis Records, the album
link I've provided goes to the CD and download version, because only 500 of these pups
were pressed and it appears to be sold out (you can still get the CD). If you regret
missing out on this vinyl, there is still time (as of this writing)
to get their follow up recording, see below. |
 Skinny
Puppy's 2007 Mythmaker was reissued and remastered on heavy weight vinyl summer of 2014,
and is still available (as of this writing), also by Metropolis
Records. 1000 copies were manufactured, so get one while you can. Listen and
purchase it digitally here for $13, if you do not want to purchase the vinyl copy,
or digitally here for $8.90. |
 In between Ministry's first release, With
Sympathy (1983), and their second release Twitch (1986),
lay the singles collection, aptly titled Twelve Inch Singles 1981-1984. As you know, that
was a collection of 8 songs and remixes that were previously only available individually,
or on the CD collection. Cleopatra reissued the collection in 2014 on 2 heavy weight, clear
vinyl records, with other goodies included! It's fantastic to have, just for the
coolness factor. Only 1000 manufactured, I recommend you get it while you can, it's
definitely an objet de vertu! The original CD had 8 songs on it, and this remastering has
16!Also, if you are in San
Diego, CA, in early January I noticed the new vinyl at Record
City, so you might want to grab it!
I find it interesting to note that
while the above collection was from 1981 to 1984, it did not include the With Sympathy
era-song 'Anything For You'. If you like the song (YouTube video),
well Uncle Al gave the song away as a Christmas gift and you can download it for free here. |

 Speaking
of Lycia, it isn't recent news, but they did re-release their incredible 1996 album Cold
on vinyl just over a year ago. Limited to only 600 copies (300 in black, 300 in milky
clear), you still might be able to pick up a copy from Handmade Birds. I am excited to
learn that Lycia does have plans for a 2015 album, A Line That Connects, and a 7"
called Silver Leaf. I'll be picking that up, for sure!

 As you know, I'm a Assemblage 23 aficionado. And while Mr. Shear hasn't produced any A23
since 2012's Bruise, he does have new music with his side project Surveillance.Check out
